Chronic Illness and Special Populations in Sport in Russia

There are 5 types of adaptive sports in Russia: 4 types implemented in the Paralympic movement, and 1 type - in the Deaflympic movement. Types of adaptive sports are classified from the type of disease of athletes or practitioners. There are distinguished: sport of the blind, sport of persons with locomotor apparatus defects, sport of persons with intellectual disabilities and sport of the deaf, soccer of persons with cerebral palsy. Based on aggregate signs separate disciplines in adaptive sports with the designated type of violation are allocated. Also in the Russian Federation as a separate sport there is group of persons with cerebral palsy, which has its own sports federation. In the past few years, many directions of adaptive sports development in the Russian Federation regions have been implemented in accordance with the Concept for the Development in the Russian Federation of the System of Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Habilitation of Persons with Disabilities, including children with disabilities, for the period until 2025 and the action plan for its implementation. Despite the existence of the International Standard on permissible types of lesions in Paralympic sports, there is currently a problem of unification and creation of a single classification of athletes by type of impairment or lesions and age categories for more successful regulation of adaptive sports and requires additional research. There is also a problem of spreading adaptive sports not only in the central regions, but throughout the Russian Federation. Along with it comes the problem of availability of special facilities for adaptive sports and financing. Adaptive sport is a powerful tool of socialization and social integration. It unites people with a common interest in games and competitions, regardless of their physical condition, and sports and cyber sports teams and communities provide an opportunity for interaction, experience sharing and support, contributing to the development of self-esteem and social skills.
